If you can't find alcohol at your hardware store, try a paint store. They also have other handy chemicals such as acetone and MEK; I just got some yesterday. I understand that if you live in The People's Republic of Kalifornia you might not be able to get this, though; might have to drive to Nevada for your supplies.
