the multifuel head gasket has gone through several design changes over
the years. the earlier gaskets had separate 'fire rings' for each cylinder as
described by tom. the gasket itself was red in color and require retorque
after warm up. these are the gaskets you will typically find if you buy a
engine gasket set from the surplus dealers who are pricing them around $125.
several tractor-trailer loads of them came out of Mechanicsburg, Pa and
they've been distributed throughout our surplus network. i and some others i
know who do a fair amount of head work put them at not much over 50% success.
the current headgasket is one piece with integral fire rings, black in color
and does not require retorque. i've found them exceptionally more reliable.
they still require some black sealant to be painted on the drivers side edge
of the gasket.
one trick i found, second hand from memphis equipment, was to pull both
heads with the manifolds attached as an assembly. if you're going to do one,
do them both and not unbolting manifolds saves alot of time.
it's been a while since i've bought any but one three hole gasket was $75
from memphis. CMS, in Agusta, Ga, was selling the entire kit with the black
head gaskets for $150. I bought from Tom Coder who has since moved to Zecon.
Personally, i would check with tom first.
