Here is the sarcastic explanation.

Just turn on cookies if you want the article and don't want to read my
geeky crap.

If you want to see how you are possibly being spied upon, read on.

Look at the 'clever' url you end up at (yours will be different of
course, are 'per computer' and 'per session'):

with my DOD-compliant Netscape version:

--plain browser, cokies disabled:
"http://www.collect.com/default.asp?MSCSProfile=95385A1F52DEA1A229D5B375420544645BCFA23C6D1A03F5D04317FD01D2C9CD5F5E779C646B870128E7C7349390D296DFCF1E867A716ED3F752A4F77034636945906A58A29319D7006608F7208A65EAB683541E29471EAE955E43B82A7BA116491B00681AC2834A893A50323BB9CB9AE2BBEC65AB9061B7CE80C261EFA0272E6CF7CAE7224F7C0E"

--refresh with java and no cookies, still no MV story:
http://www.collect.com/default.asp?MSCSProfile=95385A1F52DEA1A229D5B37542054464CA207BA7FDA37F3065EDB582EF29D0FE82AD3589D9AA1FC58A20D5AF481829048B9D2487F704B508497F4A0B6CE71EF14A3E5CDF914188813F6CA591826249960E8D60DA2DC40244FF211BA4D172C5270C09BB3AA4BD9A4B7A0454CE800E92B4783D50B64F9F19D04CE44797A2D0B5D73EF35E1BDBDED657

--The MSCSProfile is a minion of satan, er.. Microsoft. "Commerce
Server uses MSCSProfile tickets to identify and track anonymous users
who visit your site. MSCSProfile tickets are stored in persistent
cookies for users who allow persistent cookies. If users do not allow
persistent cookies, the MSCSProfile ticket is encoded in the URL (as
above --ed.). When an MSCSProfile ticket is stored in a persistent
cookie, you can determine how long the MSCSProfile ticket is valid,
typically several years..."

--More info on MSCSProfile at
"http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/csvr2002/htm/cs_se_authentication_chnv.asp"

--Now, if you enable COOKIES and Java, you get the MV page.
http://www.collect.com/interest/article.asp?id=6492&cookie%5Ftest=1

--COOKIES alone, you still get the MV page:
http://www.collect.com/interest/article.asp?id=6492

See how thenURLs are different? Ok, so why are cookies needed?
information collected? Cookies are a form of small file that a site
can place on your PC to track your UID and session, that is, to tell
the website servers where you, yourself, on your particular computer,
have been.

let's see.. who is identifying what session and collecting what
information here.. I object. How annoying. Evil! Satan begone!! Out
filthy devil!!

By the way, if I were running a web business, I would not be using
microsoft programs, they are extremely vulnerable to hacks and worms
of all kinds! Use OpenVMS for B1 security, and if it is too costly, at
least use UNIX.
