As a matter of fact, I experienced brake failure on my
M38A1 because of this. Fortunately, no one was hurt
or killed.

When I disassembled the the brake system, I found that
what used to be the wheel cylinder seals had become
sludgy, goopy (is that a word?) black crud. It was a
mess.

Maybe the residual DOT3 that was in my Jeep was more
reactive than current stuff? When I got it, the brake
system appeared to be empty. The old wheel cylinders
were fairly worn and the seals cracked, so I replaced
them with NOS ones (I think they were for the M151 and
the seals were like new...no rot...)

I had taken the previous owner's word for it that it
had DOT 5 in there, so I topped it off with DOT 5
after replacing the wheel cylinders. Later, he
admitted it "could have had DOT 3 in there" after I
told him about the brake failure. Never, never, EVER
assume anything. :-)

Be careful...
