Re: [MV] How to make your own lockouts for the M35 Rockwell 240 axle

Dave,

I think Tom does it to get a kick out of our
reactions. But then again who care's about Tom. What
kind of lunatic would spend as many dollars and
resources on a M35 as he did just to make it go 70+
mph, have air conditioning, a redundant brake system,
way too many gages, lights, knobs, and switches, not
to mention a cheap throw away 3208 Cat engine.

With that said, I should relay my quest for free wheel
hubs. Last year I started calling around for a spare
set of hubs that I could machine the splines out of.
The cheapest I could find was $35 a piece. So I
decided to machine my own out of raw stock. I didn't
want to wear out my welcome by overusing the 15"
Colchester at work so I bought my own 16" Southbend
lathe (it's even Navy surplus). One year later the
lathe is under power, cleaned up, and operating as it
should. I now have two hubs ready to bore out the
holes in and press in the oil impregnated bushings.
But, before I do that I need to find a decent boring
bar setup on Ebay as the lathe came with zero tooling.
If you add the cost of the lathe, stock for hubs,
tooling, and electrical hookup I could have bought
many sets of real hubs from Art. But, I did get to
use the M35 to haul home the lathe.

Marc
