Ryan:
If you care to argue about the Web being a viable source for record keeping, I am prepared, but lets take it off the list. As a quick point of reference however, pull down your list of "favorites" and revisit all the web sites you have tagged in 10 years....I would think you will find a good number of sites don't exist anymore. The point being, the web is not a library where one can go for material. Have a 286 or Apple IIE computer from which you never transferred all your important records? If so, you will understand the inherent weakness of non-print media. Can you readily lay your hands on a favorite documentary you saw on television in the mid 1970s? Those are "documents". Any scholar/researcher/TRAINED historian will tell you, "if you can't trace back to the source of information, the information is not useable as a standard." The Web, though loaded with wonderful information, has not provided the means (like the Library of Congress), for recording information for posterity.

The other problem with Web-based research, is it tends to be full of opinions. When was the last time you saw someone footnote a posting? Information found on the Web is about the same as finding a coin on the street. It is fun to pick up and more fun to spend, but if you go back to that same spot on the street, is unlikely you will find more valuables....and you DEFINITELY won't find the source of the original coin!

So, the point is, if you found some info you like, print it out. Try to record the where you found it. The Web is an ever-evolving media that doesn't rely on archiving for its existence. Don't let it confuse you into thinking what you found on it today will be there tomorrow. More importantly, question the research behind all that you find on it.

Stepping off the soapbox...

Umm, seen Google? I can find stuff I posted over 10 years ago to a medium that most folks don't look at any more. Usenet.
