That Pacific was stunning wasn't it! It's one of my true dream machines. I spent a long time talking to the owner - obviously the subject of money came up and we agreed that if you love your hobby enough you'll pay whatever it costs. He came from Clermont Ferrand in central France. He had it low-loadered to Calais, drove onto and off the ferry and then had it low-loadered up to Beltring. The transport alone must have cost a fortune but I believe he had a good time.

I spent nearly £1000 on fuel for various trucks and armour that week and consider it money well spent (and I only live 40 miles away). As the Pacific owner said, where else is something like that or the Ward seen by people who actually know what they're looking at?

Did you see the Saturday night WW2 tank convoy around the site? We tagged on the end of that and I felt quite comforted knowing that I was in the presence of true gas guzzlers. It helps to gain some perspective on these things! I also try to remind myself that there are people out there who restore and fly old aeroplanes - now THAT's an expensive hobby compared to mine!!!

You guys are really fortunate over there and should enjoy it while it lasts. Alternative fuels may be the way forward and I'm thinking about converting the Ward to run on LPG which is becoming increasingly available and is cheaper (at the moment) than traditional fuels.

In case anyone wonders why I don't complain overly about the fuel prices here, it's that I consider it to be part of my responsibility as a good citizen to pay my taxes. I choose to live in this country so I accept the rules. If we pressurise the government into reducing fuel taxation, they'll just have to put it onto something else. They need to raise the money somehow so we'll pay up in the end regardless.

When in the UK a few weeks ago I commented that I thought the guy that had the M26 was my hero.....after figuring the cost of fuel, the oil he running on the chains....as he drove around the grounds at Beltring.......expensive!

 

I also told several people that they should visit the States as due to the weak dollar, the food and hotels were half price and the gas almost free here, by comparison......

I'm sure Nigel will have more to say, but for my part, those of us in the UK who are into big trucks regard it as part of the cost of the hobby. It also has the useful by-product of making big vehicles cheap. My insurance is cheap (£40/year), road tax is free and I do not have to have the truck tested. I do all my own work so the only actual cost is the fuel, which is sadly non-negotiable. 1000miles this year at 4mpg... I just try not to think about it. If you want to do it, you swallow and pay up. And no, I'm by no means a millionaire - just passionate about my hobby.

If I paid US fuel prices, I'd use the truck to drive to work because it would cost the same as my current daily driver here. Enjoy it while it lasts!
