I have good luck usually by taking the float cover off and spraying
liberally with carb cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes and then blow
out all of the passages possible with compressed air. My tractor carbs
are always getting gummed up as I don't drive/run some of them enough.

If you do this and it runs but still a little rough, add a pint of STP
type carb/injector cleaner to the gas tank. I have found that most of
that stuff actually works somewhat.
