Re: M35, what next for longer bed?

So you would need about 13 hp for 10KW but with losses - gear drag,
electrical inefficiencies etc - you would need closer to 17 or 18 hp
which is still no more than a slightly fast idle for a multi-fuel.

Chances are that even if you have an airconditioner running, you won't
be drawing much more than 4-5 KW continuously, unless you are running an
air compressor or some other heavy tool.

My M51 dump with the R6602 continental engine has a PTO hydraulic pump
to raise the bed and even with a full load in the bed of more than 10
tons, the engine can raise that bed easily even at idle, without
stalling. It takes a while, so I normally kick up the thottle to get
more oil flow so I don't have to wait so long.

Those farm PTO generators are usually setup for a 1 3/8" 6 spline drive
shaft that runs at 540 rpm so you could probably have a short custom
drive shaft made up to tie into a PTO on the transmission. I think you
can still buy new commercial PTOs that hang right on the transmission of
an M35 for a couple hundred bucks. They usually have a cable mechanism
you can run into the cab to engage and disengage them. I have one such
unit on a 2 1/2 ton ex-utility truck. It has a hydraulic pump which was
used to run a boom crane. As an alternative to mounting the generator
under the truck, I guess you could also mount the generator above the
truck frame and run a couple of V-belts to the PTO shaft if you wanted
to. Similar to what they used to do on old civy wreckers with roller
chain drives to bed mounted PTO winches. But a V belt drive would be
lot quieter and require less maintenance than a chain drive.
