I've had common auto parts store rebuilt/exchange ones which had the NO SHIM
clearly marked in the casting end of the solenoid, only to have a little red
tag att'd by the rebuilder warning something to the effect that the NO SHIM
label may or may not be accurate now that it's been rebuilt, along with a
shim wire-tied and dangling from the starter in case it should be needed.

I would imagine a take-out starter saying NO SHIM would be just that - no
shim required - but perhaps when they rebuild them they mill the mating
surface down a bit to true it up? Just a guess.
