The chisel method does work. I never thought of making one. I've always known
these as 'faucet washer chisels'. They are basically a long square pyramid
that grips at each edge when wedged into the hole. I then put an open end
wrench or vice grips on it and turn it out.

I've never seen a temperature gauge screwed directly into the head, They were
always screwed into a bushing, then screwed into the head.
