Gavin,

This idea would work if I only had two or three vehicles. However for those of us
afflicted with the collecting diesease, it's a different story. According to my
wife, I have something like 20+ vehicles and devices with internal combustion
engines. (I stopped counting a few years back, although my wife has threatened a
wheel tax recently to be paid in honey-do hours) If I were to try and change the
oil on all of these vehicles, tractors, welders, etc every 3 months I'd go broke
quickly, or I'd have to divest myself of some of my equipment. Rather than do
that I've found moderation to be the key. Do what maintenance is logical and
reasonable and do things to minimize maitenance requirements. IE keep them under
cover, out of the sun, etc. I grease my 5 ton M51 once per year and change the
oil once per year. I put under 3000 miles on it per year. Since it has 60+
grease fitting and takes about 5 gallons of Rotella T to fill it up, I find that
to be reasonable and fairly economical for the miles put on it. However, once
again, I don't just start and stop the engine when I fire it up. Once I start the
engine up I let it run for at least 30 minutes. It takes about 20 minutes of
running just to get it up to full temp. This is no small matter since it slurps
gas even while idling at the rate of about 10 gallons per hour. But that is the
cost of having a larger vehicle. Anyway, my point is that if I were to change the
oil in all of my engines every three months, I wouldn't be doing much else. So
although oil is cheaper than metal, time is even more precious.
